Bangkok: An Evolutionary Gem

Whether you call the city Bangkok which translates to “Village of Plums” or Krung Thep (the name that translates to the more familiar “City of Angels”), this vast home to 8+ million tickles the senses with its blend of flavors, sites and sounds.  One day you’re excited to drown yourself into the vibrancy and the next day, all you want to do is hide away.  It’s a place I am always excited to visit and yet I can’t stay too long. Such is the contrast in this cosmopolitan.  It’s one of the most touristed cities in the world, yet locals still giggle when encountering a farang/foreigner.  You can see revelers just on their way home in the early morning while monks do their circuit for folks rich and poor to tak baht/alms giving.  As with much of the country, it embraces strong females and holds the matriarchy in high esteem, but watch just about any soap opera or movie, and you’re often reminded that even the toughest woman still waits to be dominated by a man who is meant to be “the one” for her. Anyway, if you’ve got an amazing memory, try memorizing the entire name: Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit
